GUT KLOSTERMUEHLE ALT MADLITZ
An idyllic place with a history
Our unique and idyllic location on Lake Madlitz has been attracting people since early medieval times. Carthusian monks dammed up the lake to power a water mill which supplied flour to the surrounding communities for centuries and to which Gut Klostermühle (literally, "monastery mill estate") owes its name. Illustrious guests have helped shape the character of Alt Madlitz and added to its renown. The East Prussian family of Finck von Finckenstein settled here in 1751, occupying both the castle in the village and the buildings on Lake Madlitz. Frederick the Great, the famous king of Prussia, recovered at nearby Madlitz Castle from the lost battle of Kunersdorf in 1759. The German Emperor Wihelm II went hunting in the forests around our mill. After 1945, the area was claimed by GDR state security services who closed it off to the public.
Today, thanks to the commitment of the Duesseldorf-based architect Walter Brune and Renate Brune the place shines in new splendour. And as before, the idyllic atmosphere of Madlitz charms and delights the visitor. You will sense this as soon as you arrive.
